Sailor Jerry has made a significant contribution to the art of tattooing and old school style. It has expanded the range of colours available by developing its own pigments. He then created custom needle formations that incorporated the pigment with much less trauma to the skin. He became one of the first artists to use disposable needles. His tattoo studio was one of the first to use an autoclave to sterilize equipment. Collins' last studio was at 1033 Smith Street in Honolulu’s Chinatown, the only place on the island where tattoo studios were located at the time. Among the most famous tattooed subjects by Sailor Jerry were bottles of alcohol, snakes, raptors, swallows, engines, nautical stars, weapons, dice, anchors and pin-ups.
